Ducks!

Oh how I love those lovely little birds that say quack! quack! quack! So, you might be wondering what this is all about yea?

Let me start with a little bit of a background story. Long ago, just after I graduated college, I have been working as a software developer. I have also been heavily active in church activities, especially as a musician. And then I became a husband to my lovely wife and a full time Dad to my precious, beautiful daughter. Despite all the challenges of juggling these responsibilities, I am able to manage and balance my time, but the problem is that somehow you feel that every day becomes a routine.

I suddenly felt that I wanted something new and so it came.

One day I woke up and went outside to get some fresh air, but oh man it stinks! I went out to investigate as the law of cause and effect compels me to and then I discovered the horrid cause of it all.

Duck poop everywhere!

Scattered all over the place where my daughter plays with my nephew. The wind certainly did  not just bring it here and so I thought, “What the heck is my brother doing?! Bringing home ducks and just letting them loose! “I wanted to confront my brother about it but I thought to myself “I will just handle this. Besides, I am not really doing anything at the moment.”

I looked at the nearby gloomy land which I have been planning to cultivate for a very long time but just didn’t have the chance to. I saw the jackfruit tree that was almost covering the whole area and then came up with a brilliant plan. I am going to cut those branches down and trim that mango tree in the middle while I’m at it. I will use the branches to build a duck cage and start plowing that soil and then I will think of what to plant afterwards. Oh, and I’ll leave the poop cleaning to my brother. That way, it’s like hitting 3 birds with one stone - the bird, the garden, and my boredom.

Alright! Good job! Great plan!

My excitement rose while the plan went into motion. More than a month had passed and TADAH! Duck cage was done, and the soil was now ready to be planted. I let my wife and daughter decide what to plant and let them do the planting themselves. Mission accomplished!

Oh I can’t really explain the joy I was feeling while looking at their beautiful smiles as they sow the seeds on the plots. The excitement you can visibly see on their faces as they watched the plants grow everyday was priceless. It’s a memory I will cherish for a lifetime.

Everything was going well and days have come and gone while we all look forward to the day of reaping what we sow. I remember that particular day, I woke up feeling happy about everything, “hmm hmm hmm.” I was happily humming along to a song inside my head as I walked outside the house breathing the air and in the perfect mood to enjoy a good sight —  but then suddenly an extremely horrifying view was right in front of my face!

The plants are all gone! Only the stalks are left!

Plant stalks

What happened?!!

TO BE CONTINUED......

Ok, I just wanted to put a cliffhanger effect on throwaways, let’s continue.

While I was devastated at what the plants have to suffer and end up becoming, upon my quick investigation I was able to determine with precision the suspect of this offense. Oh yes, I saw the culprit at a near distance. It was a duck! My neighbor’s duck!

I was engulfed with rage and I wanted to strangle it to death right then and there but, I had to pause and employ the quick-and-most-logical-way-to-act manner of thinking that I have developed over the years as a programmer which thankfully, has helped me to overcome the desire of committing a crime. I had to compose myself and think of the possible scenarios and consequences of my action.

Scenario 1 and Scenario 2

Obviously, I went with the latter because I am a man of conscience and who has a solid foundation of morals and values and obviously, the duck is another element of this story that has become a catalyst of change to upgrade the current specs of the situation. I decided to proceed with the second scenario and executed the necessary actions to be taken and granted the duck what is best for it, liberty.

As a result of bestowing freedom to the duck, I was able to provide the new crops that we planted safety and security. Above all, I have granted it the opportunity to blossom as they grow to become one day a food on our platter to satisfy and fulfill our craving desires and to let it fulfill its purpose to provide sustenance for my family and myself.

Before I end just as any good story has to end, I would like to leave something I learned from those experiences so anyone who is currently reading this won’t at least feel like you somehow wasted your time.

I realized that when you get bored, you can really use anything even as ridiculous as a bird poop as a motivation to accomplish something. An inspiration to movement can arrive even in the most unlikely form, such as the bird, the garden, and my boredom.

Cringe.

But that’s all!

At day's end, the outcome you produce is what matters after all. I trust that what I've written here has been worthy of your time.
