My Journey as a GDG CDO Volunteer: From Hesitant Speaker to Confident Speaker

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about technology and the way it connects people. Joining the GDG (Google Developer Group) as a CDO (Cagayan De Oro City) Volunteer was an opportunity that aligned perfectly with my desire to share knowledge and help others embrace Google technologies. However, the journey was not just about guiding others—it was also an inner journey of facing personal challenges and conquering fears. I joined the group via my Instructor in college and he invited me and my wife to join the group.

Embracing the Volunteer Spirit

Being a part of GDG was more than attending meetings or organizing events—it was about creating opportunities where enthusiasts could explore and learn about the latest in Google technology. Every year, our group hosted engaging events and detailed roadmaps that opened new doors for learning and innovation. I witnessed students having fun learning new technologies and sharing their knowledge with others and using it to build projects and solve problems.

Stepping Up to the Challenge

One of the most transformative experiences came when I was tasked with speaking in front of an audience of 200 people. The idea of me speaking in front of a large crowd was daunting. Public speaking has long been a source of anxiety for me as a speaker, but I realize it will only happen once in your first public speaking event. The next events were much easier to handle.

I vividly remember the moment before the talk—the pulse-pounding anticipation and the overwhelming thought, “Can I really do this?” But as soon as I started sharing my insights and stories, I felt a shift. The energy in the room, the nods of understanding, and the supportive smiles of the audience reminded me that the journey was as much about connecting with people as it was about overcoming personal fears.

Learning Public Speaking: Tips and Insights

Over time, I discovered several tips that made a tremendous difference in my public speaking journey:

1. Preparation is Key: Learn and research your topic thoroughly and outline your key points. Knowing your material gives you the confidence to improvise if necessary. Knowing the subject well is essential for a successful presentation. Because it will boost your confidence when it comes to the Q/A part of the event.

2. Practice, Practice, Practice: Rehearse your presentation several times before the actual event. Go to the mirror and record yourself talking about your topic. Gather a small group of friends to act as your audience. For me I have my partner who can be my judge in my presentation.

3. Engage Your Audience: Make your talk interactive. Ask questions, share stories, and encourage dialogue to keep your listeners involved. Have memes and jokes to break the ice. And make your presentation more engaging by adding pictures, nice colors. Then always interact by asking questions and sharing your thoughts.

Transformative Moments and Personal Growth

Each event contributed to my evolution—not only as a volunteer but as an individual. Overcoming my fear of public speaking was a process of gradual transformation. It happened through multiple practice sessions, rehearsals, and the real event. I learned that vulnerability is a strength, and speaking from the heart resonates with people more than a flawless performance ever can.
