Experience in My First Job

Hi there! My name is Judy Mae Mariano, and in this article, I have decided to share a glimpse of my ongoing journey within my chosen profession. As a recent graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, the transition to the professional world has been a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation.

My graduation in June 2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. It was the beginning of stepping into the realm of professional opportunities which was truly exciting, but it was at some point accompanied by the nagging worry of uncertainty. Questions like "What if I don’t get hired?" and "What if I don’t get to practice my profession?" loomed large in my mind.

Despite these uncertainties, I've chosen to view this period as a work in progress, a tale with its fair share of highs and lows. Through my article, I hope to offer you a window into my journey, sharing the challenges and triumphs that come with pursuing my first job.

And so, the moment arrived when an opportunity came. Enter Montani, extending the offer for my first job post-graduation. Again, I felt excited and nervous. Excited, because I would be able to learn new things and experience what it’s like in the industry, of course I won’t deny I was also excited to receive my monthly paycheck! Nervous because I would be working with people from different countries, with diverse backgrounds and cultures. Also, I felt fear in making mistakes, again there are new thoughts such as “what if I made a mistake”, “what if I don’t get to be a regular employee?”.

Before long, I faced my fair share of mistakes, a heart stopping moment, if I may say. To be frank, I made a significant one by inadvertently pushing our API key on GitHub – in a non technical sort of a way, which is a mistake akin to broadcasting your password for everyone to see. Thankfully, what proved to be my anchor to go through this hiccup was the power of communication. By promptly reaching out to my supervisor and openly acknowledging my mistake, I took responsibility for my actions and so, with sweaty hands, I mustered the courage to promptly inform my supervisor about the mishap. I vividly recall the anxiety coursing through me, fearing immediate dismissal. However, to my relief, my supervisor simply instructed me to rectify the error by removing the sensitive information and thus, without hesitation, I deleted the branch I was working on.

Some might argue that I could have quietly deleted the branch without involving my manager. However, I couldn't bring myself to do so. I was taught that other than technical skills, effective communication is also one that would help an employee in any situation, especially in a remote setup, it is very important for resolving issues and as a means to demonstrate commitment to transparency and accountability.

Furthermore, speaking of communication, it has been very helpful in another aspect of my job—flexible scheduling. Having open lines of communication with my supervisor has granted me the opportunity to experience flexibility in my work hours. When I have events or obligations that require my attention during regular working hours, I simply reach out to my supervisor, requesting permission to adjust my shift to the afternoon or evening. This arrangement allows me to efficiently manage my time, ensuring that I can fulfill both professional responsibilities and personal commitments without undue stress or conflict.

My professional journey still has a long way to go. I hope though, you had a good read even with the brief glimpse I have shared with you, I’d say, they were more of a snapshot of my experiences. In summary, I can say that my experience here at Montani has been awesome!

From the moment I stepped into this professional realm, I've been met with opportunities for growth, challenges that have pushed me to excel, and a supportive environment that fosters both personal and professional development.

In essence, my experience here has been nothing short of transformative. It has not only equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge but has also instilled in me a sense of confidence and fulfillment in my work. The culture here encourages innovation and creativity, allowing me to explore different approaches to problem-solving and contribute my unique perspective to projects and initiatives.

As I look ahead, I am filled with excitement for the continued growth, challenges, and successes that await me on this ongoing journey.
