In my first endeavor to navigate the path toward understanding culture, I wrote this article two years ago. It encapsulates a sensation of distress that compels me to share it, as I’ve often felt misunderstood. Despite putting forth my utmost effort, I’ve fallen short of meeting the desired outcome. During that period, the anguish I experienced was palpable, so intense that it frequently triggered thoughts of seeking alternative employment.

The feedback I yearned for seemed elusive, and my aspiration to learn and make meaningful contributions to the company was unparalleled. I’ve consistently held the conviction that neither I nor those around me are at fault. However, the precise term to encapsulate this void eludes me. It is the very ache that propels me to delve deeper, ultimately revealing an intangible affliction that silently afflicts the team — an affliction I now term “Cultural Gap”.

I encountered this term with I delved into Erin Meyer’s book, “The Culture Map”. It was here that I realized my experience was far from unique; this affliction extends across multicultural companies. Those companies that actively address and integrate awareness of cultural gaps have a distinct advantage. Such efforts facilitate a profound appreciation for the diverse perspectives of individuals, fostering an environment of acceptance. Inclusivity stands as the cornerstone of fostering remarkable collaboration within teams — the very teams that play a pivotal role in producing high-quality outcomes. Exceptional teams excel in communication, acknowledging that occasional hiccups may arise. However, they master the art of attentive listening, effective message delivery, and mutual learning.

Effective communication inherently leads to efficiency, which, in turn, opens more room for collaboration and exchange of knowledge. As individuals shed inhibitions and fear of embarrassment, a climate of openness emerges, allowing for the challenge of the system, challenging the status quo, and exposing the problem. Trust and courage are the opposite of fear. It makes people hide mistakes. When team members hide mistakes, it will be repeated often with no clear path for tracing their origins. The cumulative repetition of mistakes slowly brings down a business.

Join me in this exploration as we unlock the potential of cultural intelligence, and I invite you to embark on a transformative journey that will not only reshape your professional pursuits but also enrich your perspective on the diverse tapestry of our interconnected world.
